FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
COVINGTON, June 5, 2013 - Cornerstone Track & Athletic Association, Inc. (CTAA) - a non-profit track and athletic organization serving Newton, Rockdale and surrounding counties - is excited to announce that 2 of their club members, Kandacia Sims (shot put) and Tieteanna Williams (1500m) earned ribbons for placing in the top 6 of their age division for their events during the USA Track & Field (USATF) Area C Meet on Saturday, June 1, 2013 in Locust Grove, GA.
Last year the team registered nine athletes for the Area meet, which is the prerequisite for participation in the USATF’s Georgia, Regional and National meets. This year the association registered 17 student-athletes between the ages of 11 and 16, who now have an opportunity to compete in the USATF Georgia Association Jr. Olympic Meet scheduled to take place at the Mill Creek High School in Hoschton, GA on Friday, June 13 – Sunday, June 16, 2013
USATF is the National Governing Body for track and field, long-distance running and race walking in the United States. The association hopes to continue to grow their program and is equally committed to encouraging student-athletes in Newton, Rockdale and the surrounding areas to participate in the Junior Olympics.
Coach Glenroy Hodge, President and Athletic Director of the association, said his goal was to increase the number of students from our area participating in USATF sanctioned meets. Hodge explained that an increase in participation, as well as, the establishment of additional track clubs locally, will provide convenient and positive outlets for youth during the summer months. Track is an excellent way for current and potential student-athletes to increase their lung capacity, control their weight, and improve agility, speed and strength.
During the summer of 2012 26 student-athletes actively participated in regularly scheduled practices and strength & conditioning workouts. Of those participating, 14 females and 6 males entered track and field competitions held throughout the Metro-Atlanta area, including the Jr. Olympics and Georgia State Games. Student-athletes earned ribbons and medals in the Triple Jump, Shot Put, 200m Hurdles, Discus, Long Jump, 200m dash and 1500m.
The mission of the Cornerstone Track and Athletic Association is to provide student-athletes aged 5-18 opportunities to strive toward and achieve their maximum potential in both athletics and academics. The association conducts open registration year-round for track and field, cross country, as well as, strength and conditioning training. Parents and student-athletes are encouraged to visit the association’s website at www.cornerstonetrackandathletics.org for additional information or phone Coach Glenroy Hodge, Sr. at 678-296-7077 or Executive Director Olinda Ricard-Hodge at 678-658-6725.
