COVINGTON, March 13, 2013- Newton County Recreation Commission and Cornerstone Track & Athletic Association, Inc., a non-profit track and athletic organization serving Newton, Rockdale and surrounding counties is excited to announce their partnership in hosting the county’s 1st HERSHEY’s Track & Field Meet for youths ages 6 – 14. Students that are members of their schools track & field team are ineligible to compete.
Winners in the Saturday, April 12, 2013 meet, with the exception of all youth ages 6 – 8, and the 9-12 year old 4x100 relays participants, will advance to the state meet on Saturday, May 9, 2014. State meet winners will be entered into a regional pool and become eligible for selection to a Regional Team which will travel to Hershey, Pennsylvania, to compete in the North American Final, held on Saturday, August 2, 2014. All regional winners will qualify for the North American Final Meet
Events will include the 50 meter dash, 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash, 400 meter dash, 800 meter run, 1600 meter run, 4 x 100 meter relay, standing long jump, and softball throw.
Hershey’s Track & Field Games is designed to encourage physical fitness among youth and emphasize participation and sportsmanship. The Hershey's Track & Field Games has involved millions of youngsters from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and the 10 provinces and 3 territories of Canada. It is solely sponsored by The Hershey Company and partnered with the National Recreation and Park Association, Athletics Canada and National Association for Sport and Physical Education.
April 12th is also recognized as Global Youth Service Day. Middle and high students are being recruited to serve as volunteers through the Youth Alliance for Leadership & Life, Inc to earn community service hours by working at the event. Adult volunteers are also needed to ensure the success of this event.
Participants and volunteers must register online at www.cornerstonetrackandathletics.org before the Thursday, April 3, 2014 deadline to secure their t-shirts. The entry fee is $6.00 for youth age 6 – 8 and $12.00 for ages 9 – 14 as of December 31st of 2014.
